Conference to highlight ‘New Evangelizers for the New Evangelization’

The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization is organizing “New Evangelizers for the New Evangelization,” a conference that will take place on October 15 in preparation for the 2012 synod of bishops.

“We want to visibly present the Church with the new evangelizers, because in this way we make the Word of God known and we can increase the disciples of the Lord,” said Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the pontifical council’s president. “They will give the city of Rome a visible sign of a new evangelization. And we hope that their efforts will bear fruit.”

“The new evangelization was not born because the Holy See established a new department; for 27 years Blessed John Paul II ‘provoked’ the Church in every possible way into recognizing the urgent need for new evangelization,” he added. “We want to reinforce that evangelization is the very mission of the Church, and it has been going on for over two thousand years, but it needs to find a new language, a new lifestyle–one that is respectful but has a deeply rooted identity.”

Calling upon those involved in the new evangelization to work with immigrants who encounter secularism when they arrive in Europe and the United States, Archbishop Fisichella called for evangelizers “who have a profound sense of belonging to the Church and the Christian community but at the same time who are open to others. And also a good dose of joy and enthusiasm, which is never a bad thing.”
