Pope: The Word of God is not confined to Bible

Is this the Word or does the Word include Tradition?

The pope is reiterating a long held Catholic dogma that the Bible is not the only Word of God, but so is Sacred Tradition. In stating this, the Catholic Church can add to the Word of God whenever they want, since they believe Tradition is equal to the Bible. Dogma like the Immaculate Conception and the Immaculate Assumption are not in the bible. However the church says it is part of the Word of God since it remains in Sacred Tradition and it was also proclaimed from the “seat of Peter.” This is a dangerous theology. What else will be added to the ‘Word’ in the future? Because of this theology the Roman Catholic Church says they are the only church on earth that can interpret the scriptures. Let us not forget the Bereans who were praised for not believing even what the apostles told them, not until they read the scriptures and searched them thoroughly. We are told Not to follow traditions of men like the pharisees, but to hold fast to the Word and be born again. Read the following article from Catholic Culture news:

Word of God lives on in Church tradition, Pope reminds Biblical Commission

In a message to the Pontifical Biblical Commission, Pope Benedict XVI has observed that “the Word of God is not confined to writing,” but has “continued to be announced and interpreted by the living tradition of the Church.”

While Revelation “ended with the death of the last apostle,” the Pope said, the Word of God is not “an inert matter” but rather the “life force” of the Church. Tradition, passed on from the apostles, “advances with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, and grows through reflection and study on the part of believers,” he said.

For that reason, the Pope stressed in his message, it is important to study and understand the role of inspiration in the Scriptures—which was the topic of this week’s meeting of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. The Pope concluded that it is critical to interpret Scripture according to its proper nature, “and inspiration and truth are constituent characteristics of that nature.”

  1. “the Catholic Church can add to the Word of God whenever they want, since they believe Tradition is equal to the Bible” ???

It is written in the book of Revelation, at the end of the Bible:

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (Revelation 22:18-19)

Catholics, or other persons, that add to or remove from the Bible exclude themself from God’s salvation…

  2. Yosua,

While it is indeed wrong to add to, or subtract from, Scripture, the passage from Revelation can not be used as the “proof text” for anything other than someone adding to or subtracting from THAT book. That passage is only about Revelation and not the whole Scripture; the N.T. wasn’t even assembled yet when that text was written. I have addressed this here:

That being said, the Pope is NOT God’s representative, nor is the Romanist Church the Church of Christ. Since it an apostate and heretical organization, how could it possibly speak for God? The Pope and Rome are no better than the LDS or JWs in this matter.

  3. Well, the Pope is wrong-1Cr 4:6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not take pride in one man over against another.

  4. Amen, Linda!

  5. From the Old Testament…

    Deuteronomy 4:2:

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.”

Taking away or adding to the Bible (any part of it) is going against what the Bible states.

  6. He’s leading a billions of soul to hell because he don’t know the truth that will set him free,

  7. Thats what the catholic church is there for, to send folks to hell. All religions for that matter are false. But you are more likely to get saved is you are not catholic. That cult covers all the bases. Their followers are hooked by the witchcraft in the catholic cult. They have an answer for everything.
